Xiamen University, or XMU for short, was founded in 1921 by Mr. Chen Jiageng, a famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in modern Chinese education history, and it is also a university of the same age as the CPC.   The congratulatory letter points out that Xiamen University is a university with a glorious tradition. For the past 100 years, the school has adhered to the founding aspirations of patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Chen Jiageng, formed a fine school spirit of "patriotism, revolution, self-improvement, and science", created distinctive characteristics of education, cultivated a large number of outstanding talents, and made positive contributions to the prosperity of the country, the happiness of the people, and the overseas dissemination of Chinese culture.

The school leverages its geographical advantages of "overseas Chinese, Taiwan, special features, and sea" to showcase its educational characteristics of "strait, sea silk, and ocean". It has successively entered the ranks of national key universities, "211 Project", "985 Project", and "Double First Class" construction universities. The school has established Siming Campus, Zhangzhou Campus, Xiang'an Campus, and Malaysia Campus, with 6 faculties, 34 colleges (directly affiliated departments, directly affiliated centers), and 17 research institutes, forming a disciplinary system covering 12 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, art, and interdisciplinary fields. It also has 36 postdoctoral research stations. In 2022, the school was selected for the second round of "Double First Class" construction universities announced by the state, and six disciplines including chemistry, biology, marine science, ecology, statistics, and education were selected for the second round of "Double First Class" construction disciplines. In the new round of national discipline evaluation, the number of peak disciplines and advantageous disciplines has doubled, achieving the best historical results.

The school adheres to the principle of strong talent and strong teaching staff. There are nearly 3000 full-time teachers, of which 74% are professors and associate professors. There are a total of 35 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (including 18 dual hired), 4 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences for developing countries, 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, 56 project leaders from national key research and development programs, 179 national level leading talents, and 223 national level young talents; There are 12 national innovation research groups, 2 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Basic Science Center, 9 innovation teams from the Ministry of Education, and 6 national level teaching masters. A number of exemplary teacher ethics have emerged, including the Huang Danian style teacher team from national universities, advanced collectives in the national education system, national education families, and national outstanding teaching awards.
